As part of the measure to guarantee effective democracy while curbing issues of multiple registration and disenfranchisement of voters, the Independent National Electoral Commission has continued to engage with critical stakeholders for collaborations and commitments towards actualizing its mandate.

This time, it was media executives aimed at brainstorming on the set goals for the FCT Area Council Elections, Ekiti,

and Osun state governorship elections in the country.

Speaking at the first quarterly meeting with media executives at the INEC headquarters Abuja.

Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu appeals to the media to beef up sensitization to discourage double registrations which had close to 15,000 identified cases with the help of the new device out of 40,000 newly registered voters particularly in the Federal Capital Territory.

Meanwhile, speaking further on the low turnout of transfer of voters to the newly created polling units, the INEC boss reiterates that the commission is not willing to deploy election materials to empty polling units on election day, thus calling for more enlightenment on the public to encourage those who wish to transfer from one polling units to another to do so in order to avoid disenfranchisement.

“In addition to the end of tenure elections, six bye-elections are scheduled to hold on Saturday 26th February 2022 in Cross River, Imo, Ondo, and the Plateau States. The detailed Timetable is already uploaded on our website and social media platforms. Hard copies are also included in your folders for this meeting. However, three bye-elections are still pending. You may recall that the Commission suspended Ekiti East I State Constituency bye-election in March 2020 following its violent disruption by thugs. The election will now be combined with the State Governorship election held on 18th June 2022.

The date for the Shinkafi State Constituency bye-election in Zamfara State will be announced after a thorough review of the security situation in the area, while the Commission awaits the declaration of vacancy by the Kaduna State House of Assembly in respect of Giwa West State Constituency.

The list of Polling Units having 0 – 50 registered voters in the FCT is among the documents in your folders for this meeting. The Commission looks forward to the support of media organizations to encourage voters who wish to transfer from their present Polling Units to new ones created as part of the Commission’s expansion of access polling units across the country.”

Also, the President Nigerian Union of Journalists Chris Isiguzo represented by the National Treasurer, Bamidele Atunbi while commending the commission for their conduct over the years calls on both the political parties and the public to support INEC’s visions to building the democracy of our dreams for peaceful coexistence.
