ELECTION UPDATE: BAYELSA STATE TO COMMENCE VOTING BY SUNDAY 8:30 AM-INEC BOSS

To curb the disenfranchisement of citizens in the Bayelsa state capital Yenogoa, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has ordered Polling Units to be opened on Sunday 26th February 2023 for Presidential, Senatorial, and Federal constituencies in the state.

This is due to the disruption of the electioneering process at the stipulated date for the February 25, 2023, general election.

Speaking at a national briefing at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said the four wards which were disrupted were fit for purpose as a result of the security intervention but wouldn’t want to go against the wishes of the Corps members, hence prompting to the extension of the affected 141 Polling Units till Sunday, thus enjoining the public to take advantage in the discharge of their civic rights to achieve results.
Giving clarifications on the Edo State National Assembly election, the INEC Chairman noted that there were some fractions on the ballot paper, hence ordering the suspension of election in three zones of the state till 11th March 2023.

According to the INEC boss, this election will be conducted alongside state constituency elections, thus assuring that other ballot papers will be reprinted by the commission.
On the issues of violence and impending disruption of collation centers across the country, Mahmood said they have beefed up security to surmount threats.
As Nigerians wait patiently to receive their leaders, the INEC chairman has reassured of its determination to make the 2023 general election credible and transparent, prompting this constant briefing to enlighten the public on the stages of the electioneering process.
