AS GROUPS CALL FOR URGENT IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FOOD RIGHTS ACT

Stakeholders across the Farm & Infrastructure Foundation and Voices For Food Security have appealed to the government at all levels to ensure the implementation of the new “Right to Food and Food Security Act (Fifth Alteration Act No. 34 2023) to eradicate hunger in the country.

The bill was signed into law on the 3rd of March 2023, by the former President, Muhammadu Buhari to curb extreme poverty and protect the vulnerable in the society.

Commending the Right to Food and Food Security Act at a world press conference organized in partnership with OXFAM Nigeria, in Abuja, the president, of Farm and Infrastructure Foundation, and Chairman, of Voices for Food Security Prof. Gbolagade Ayoola said as the new legislation begins, it is important to inform Nigerians that the Act is presently existing in the lawbooks of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as it is their rights to hold the government accountable over failure to provide them foods and its implementation.

Noting that the Act specifically directs Government policy towards ensuring that the right to food and food security meets human needs and provides millions living in hunger and malnutrition the right to a healthy and decent life in the country.
