EXPERT ECHOS THE NEED FOR GIRL-CHILD EDUCATION FOR INFORMED FAMILY DECISIONS

By Vincess Okushi

A non-profit organization, Population Matters in the UK is clamoring for vital and positive action to empower women and girls for sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.

The Head of Campaigns and Communications of the organization Alistair Currie indicated this in a conference to address salient concerns of overpopulation with the theme ‘Nigeria Population Conversation Seminar’ organized by Population Matters in the UK in partnership with Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC)Transparency International in Nigeria (TI-Nigeria), in Abuja.

Alistair while lamenting on the world’s population and in particular Nigeria said ensuring full education for women and girls is a roadmap to ending poverty, and maternal mortality as well as guaranteeing effective family planning to tackle inequality in the continent.

Those rights, to education, to freedom from poverty, to gender equality, to education and more, are, of course, fundamental rights to which everyone is entitled, whether they make a population difference or not.

We know the SDGs are way off track, that so much more needs to be done, and that people are suffering as a result of the failure to take action.

It is not our job though to tell people what to do with their lives, and it is certainly not our job to come to Nigeria and pretend we know the answers. What we can do is help to catalyze a conversation in which the people who understand the situation, the challenges, the sensitivities and in particular the opportunities can come together to look at their situation and their options.
