ECOWAS@49: WE PLACE EMPHASIS ON SECURITY, EARLY WARNING SIGNAL –  AMB. BABA

The Economic Community of West Africa States, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, Ambassador Baba Wakil, has said the community places more emphasis on the security and well-being of the citizens thereby deploying early warning mechanisms to surmount threats in the region.

He stated this at the sideline of the ECOWAS 49th Anniversary at the University of Communication and Technology, Accra, Ghana, on the role of Communication Technology in advancing the digital transformation of the Region.

Ambassador Baba while delivering a lecture he titled ‘ECOWAS Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow’ at the University of Communication and Technology in Accra on Tuesday, 28th May 2024 said digital tools and techniques have become relevant in the socio-political environment, as cyber security and data analytics are now widely used in the fight against terrorism and other transnational crimes.

Noting that the role of Communication Technology in advancing the digital transformation of the ECOWAS region to achieve economic prosperity cannot be overemphasized.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has pledged its commitment to enhance regional peace and security, with emphasis on security architecture and early warning signals.

Enhancing regional peace and security is considered a number one priority of the regional bloc, given the prevailing realities in the regional environment.

Critical issues such as the implementation of a Regional Action Plan against land and sea banditry and terrorism, and the operationalization of the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) are placed on the front burner, along with renewed focus on the role of Regional Mediators and Facilitators such as the ECOWAS Committee of the Wise (Committee of Elders).

The event was graced by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Emmanuel Afoakwa, who expressed appreciation to the leadership of ECOWAS for choosing the university to host this year’s ECOWAS Day celebration in Ghana, among others in attendance were Faculty and Academic Staff of the University including about 150 students aims at educating university students on the importance of communication technology in pursuance of ECOWAS objectives.
