The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed fear over the incumbency veto currently being exercised in Edo and Ondo states ahead of elections.
Chairman of INEC Professor Mahmood Yakubu made the expression while addressing the Senate Committee on INEC with other commissioners at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Yakubu stressed that apart from the strain on state facilities, the commission has identified impartial treatment by incumbent governors against the opposition parties and candidates.
Adding that this could further aggravate tension despite grappling with flooding issues and significant security concerns.
The INEC Boss also queries the alleged deployment of Edo State Security Network (ESSN) operatives, in the upcoming September 21 polls Stressing that such an act could incite chaos during the election.
He noted that to achieve the commission’s objective of credible polling, a list of agents must be submitted 30 days before the elections.
This is even when only one female out of the 17 candidates vying for the governorship election in Edo was a candidate in the entire race.
