DSS ISSUES WARNING AS IT MONITORS UPCOMING PROTESTS

By Vincess Okushi

The Department of State Services (DSS) has said it’s currently monitoring all the noises around the planned protests expected to kickstart in the coming weeks in various parts of Nigeria.

A statement by Peter Afunanya, PhD, Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications on 25th July 2024. said while the citizens have the right to peaceful protest it is pertinent to warn against dangerous plots by certain individuals and groups aiming to hijack these protests to incite chaos and violence across the nation.

The DSS noted that it has uncovered political motives by some politicians,  seeking to undermine the government’s reputation to destabilize the country and push for a regime change.

It therefore called on all, including community leaders, industry captains, labor unions, student associations, youth leaders, civil society, clergy, NGOs, women’s groups, civil servants, and politicians to reject any call to participate in the orchestrated violence meant to sow discord.

In our investigation, the DSS has identified the funding sources, sponsors, and collaborators behind this scheme. However, we believe that immediate aggressive action is not the solution. Instead, we are employing non-violent conflict resolution strategies, including moral persuasion, stakeholder engagement, and multi-track diplomatic efforts, to prevent these nefarious plans from materializing.

Given the potential for violence and its devastating consequences, we urge all protest groups to abandon any plans for unrest and anarchy.

Governments at all levels have been working tirelessly to address the alleged economic challenges. We ask prospective protesters to exercise patience, engage constructively with authorities, and prioritize peace. Violence only leads to the destruction of lives and property, distracting from the vital work of governance.

The DSS, in collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies, is committed to maintaining peace. We will use all legitimate means at our disposal to achieve this.

The DSS further advised Parents, guardians, and traditional and academic heads to counsel their children, wards, subjects, and students against joining the planned protests to build a nation free from rancor, bitterness, and strife. And urges the public to reach out to the service via dss.gov.ng, email at dsspr@dss.gov.ng, or +2349153391309 or +2349088373514 for any concerns or information regarding public safety.
