The International Press Centre (IPC) condemned the brutal attacks on journalists during nationwide protests on August 1 2024.
These protests, driven by anger over economic policies, saw journalists facing physical assaults, harassment, and equipment destruction.
The IPC reported incidents across Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Cross-River, and Delta states. In Lagos, News Central TV’s Benard Akede was harassed by police. In Kano, TVC News’ Ibrahim Isah was assaulted, and a Channels TV vehicle was vandalized. In Abuja, Premium Times’ Yakubu Mohammed was attacked by police, while Daily Independent’s Jide Oyekunle was arrested, and News Central TV’s Mary Adeboye was tear-gassed.
In Cross-River, Nigerian Tribune’s Joseph Abasi-Abasi was injured, and Cross River Watch’s Jonathan Ugbal was beaten and detained. Delta State saw attacks on Punch Newspaper’s Matthew Ochei, Guardian Newspaper’s Monday Osayande, and a Pointer reporter, Lucy.
Melody Akinjiyan, IPC’s Press Freedom Officer, called for investigations and emphasized the constitutional rights of journalists to cover protests. The IPC’s condemnation highlights the need to protect journalists’ safety and uphold press freedom in Nigeria.
