The United States said it has provided hot meals to over 67,000 Borno flood victims across four camps of internally displaced persons.

A statement by the state’s embassy in Nigeria on 23 September 2024 said in response to the crisis, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), representing the U.S. government, has mobilized aid through UN agencies, World Food Program (WFP), and partners on the ground.

The U. S government while expressing its deep sorrow over the catastrophic floods that have swept through Maiduguri and other areas of Borno State, Nigeria, causing widespread destruction, loss of life, and the displacement of thousands of families, condoles with the victims and their loved ones.

Stressing that the WFP is also delivering critical nutrition assistance to vulnerable groups, including pregnant and lactating women and children under five.

To further address the flood’s impact, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is deploying an initial $3 million in USAID funding to support flood relief efforts across Nigeria. USAID is also backing the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) in airlifting food supplies to remote and inaccessible areas in Borno and Maiduguri.

Local and international NGOs funded by USAID are repurposing existing resources to provide lifesaving assistance to those hit hardest by the floods in Maiduguri and neighboring Jere Local Government Area.

The U.S. also commended the courage and resilience of Maiduguri’s residents, as well as the tireless work of first responders, aid workers, and local authorities for delivering essential services amid the devastation.

Even as it pledged the government’s unreserved commitment to supporting the people of Borno in their recovery and rebuilding efforts during this challenging time.
