INEC DENIES ALLEGATIONS OF OBSTRUCTING ELECTION MATERIALS INSPECTION IN EDO STATE

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied allegations of obstructing political parties from inspecting the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices and other election materials used in recent elections in Edo State.

Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, refuted these claims, describing them as “baseless and misleading.” on October 8, 2024, and later made available to the media on October 9, in a statement.

Stressing INEC’s commitment to upholding transparency and integrity in the nation’s democratic process.

These allegations are completely devoid of truth.

Under my leadership, INEC in Edo State remains steadfast in ensuring that all electoral processes are conducted with the highest standards of fairness. Dr. Onuoha stressed.

He admonishes that the inspection of election materials, including the BVAS devices, is a legal right afforded to all political parties involved in election petitions. And announced that the inspection has been scheduled for tomorrow, October 9, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the INEC Headquarters in Edo State.

We are mandated by law to facilitate this process, and at no time has my office or any official obstructed access.

All political parties and their representatives are invited to participate in this exercise, as per legal procedures. he said.

Dr Onuoha, however, expressed disappointment at the circulation of these”unfounded accusations” without any evidence or proper engagement with his office, adding that any political party or candidate who followed due legal procedures would be granted access.

It is unfortunate that such misinformation has been spread. I urge the public to disregard these baseless claims.

INEC’s loyalty remains to the Nigerian people, the Constitution, and the rule of law.

We stand for transparency, and our doors remain open to any party wishing to engage with my office through the appropriate channels.

The statement concluded by reiterating INEC’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and accountable electoral process in Edo State to boost the integrity of the country’s elections while maintaining public trust in the democratic process.
