The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned against the contributing factors of loss of productivity, absenteeism, and high staff turnover due to mental health challenges.
Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa indicated this in a message on World Mental Health Day 2024, themed, “Healthy Minds at Work: Prioritizing Mental Health in the Workplace.”
Moeti stresses that globally, depression and anxiety lead to the loss of 12 billion workdays yearly, costing economies nearly $1 trillion. Yet, many workers, especially those in health services, low-income jobs, or insecure positions, lack the necessary support or face discrimination and stigma.
It was revealed that only 8 of the 47 countries in the WHO African Region had mental health promotion programs for workplaces in 2020, with just 3 reported collaborations between mental health services and labor departments.
The Regional Director, therefore, called on governments, employers, and individuals to prioritize mental health in the workplace while highlighting the critical role that a healthy work environment plays in people’s overall well-being.
Moeti noted that while work can provide purpose, structure, and social connections, it can also become a major source of stress.
A healthy workplace is key to not only physical health but also mental well-being.
But poor working conditions, discrimination, and lack of support are driving mental health challenges for millions around the world.
Dr Moeti added that combating this ugly trend requires a more collaborative approach to addressing mental health risks at work, urging stronger employment laws.
We need stronger employment laws, pathways between health and work services, and policies that treat mental health with the same urgency as physical health.
Investing in mental health is an investment in people; in return, a productive, innovative workforce will drive success for any organization.
It’s clear mental health in the workplace is not just a matter of well-being but a key factor in economic growth and innovation; hence, individuals are encouraged to prioritize their mental health, recognize signs of burnout, and seek help when needed.
