The inaugural Joint Annual Health Review has been convened to transform Nigeria’s healthcare landscape, gathering leaders from across the nation, including the Governor of Imo State, international partners, and representatives from all 36 states.
This event signals a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s commitment to health equity and universal care.
Speaking at the event, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare emphasized the giant strides made under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Today marks a new era for Nigeria’s healthcare. This review stands as a testament to our collective resolve for transparency, accountability, and progress. he said.
He added that under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has bolstered healthcare funding to improve equitable access to quality care for all citizens.
According to him, the increase in the 2024 health budget, coupled with an additional $3 billion in international support, will enable upgrades at more than 8,000 primary health centres nationwide.
Professor Pate noted that these investments aim to deliver essential services directly to communities and strengthen Nigeria’s health infrastructure.
He further celebrated recent public health achievements, including a 16.7% drop in under-five mortality, a 40% reduction in diarrheal diseases, and decreases in tuberculosis and HIV prevalence.
We are witnessing remarkable progress, thanks to the collaborative efforts of state governments and global partners. he noted.
The Minister also launched initiatives to tackle high maternal mortality and child malnutrition, with targeted actions in 174 high-burden areas responsible for half of the nation’s maternal deaths.
This is about saving lives and ensuring a healthier future for Nigeria. Our women and children deserve nothing less. he said.
As part of this groundbreaking event, a State of Health Report and a Public Perception Survey were introduced, offering a comprehensive, data-driven view of Nigeria’s health system.
The Minister urged Nigerians to hold leaders accountable, noting,
These reports are more than just statistics, they reflect real lives impacted by our health policies.
The Minister announced that a final report from the session will be presented to President Tinubu, mapping Nigeria’s achievements and outlining areas for growth as the nation strives for health equity and quality care for every citizen.
