Plate Shortage Cripples FCT Motorists, Traffic Group Demands Swift Action

FCT Minister Pressed To Boost License Plate Production

Motorists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are facing severe frustration over the shortage of license plates, which has crippled vehicle registration processes and caused widespread inconvenience.

Critics, including the Traffic Aspects Roundtable, have faulted the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Gwagwalada production plant, calling it ill-equipped to handle the growing demand.

Speaking during an end-of-year evaluation on transportation challenges, the group’s Publicity Secretary, Israel OlohunToyin, described the situation as a crisis.

The Gwagwalada plant is far too small to meet the rising demand for FCT number plates. Motorists prefer Abuja plates, but the supply is woefully inadequate. he stated.

He added that the scarcity is particularly acute for commercial number plates, leaving many operators unable to register their vehicles.

For those trying to register newly purchased cars, the process has become a nightmare. OlohunToyin lamented.

The group has called on the FCT Minister and state governors to follow Lagos State’s lead by establishing additional license plate production plants to address the crisis.

This is a wake-up call for the Nigeria Governors Forum. Decentralizing plate production would not only ease the burden on motorists but also generate significant revenue for the states. OlohunToyin argued.

Stakeholders are urging the decentralization of plate production as a crucial step to meet rising vehicle registration demands, reduce bottlenecks, and ensure smoother transportation across the country.
