FG Debunks COVID Variant Rumors

Assures Readiness to Protect Nigerians

The Federal Government has dismissed rumours circulating about the detection of the new COVID-19 variant, XEC, in Nigeria, reassuring citizens that the variant has not been identified within the country. 

 

The Federal Ministry of Health has reiterated its readiness to tackle any potential outbreaks and urged Nigerians to remain calm.

 

In a press release dated December 6, 2024, the Ministry underlined its dedication to strengthening the nation’s health system to combat emerging infectious diseases effectively. 

 

Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, stated,

The Federal Ministry of Health is committed to delivering accessible and affordable healthcare, particularly in times of global health concerns. We urge the public to disregard false information and remain vigilant.

The COVID-19 variant XEC, first identified in Australia, has spread to 29 countries, sparking global alarm due to its heightened virulence. 

 

Despite these developments, the Ministry confirmed that,

There is no evidence of COVID variant XEC in Nigeria. The public should not panic but continue to practice universal health precautions such as regular hand washing and personal hygiene.

To strengthen preparedness, the Federal Government has upgraded Federal Tertiary Hospitals nationwide, equipping them with molecular laboratories, isolation centres, and intensive care units featuring ventilators. 

 

While surveillance has also been heightened at all points of entry into Nigeria.

 

The Ministry, therefore, dismissed the viral letter circulating on social media, labelling it as false and misleading. 

We must focus on verified information to prevent unnecessary panic. Our healthcare facilities are prepared, and surveillance efforts remain robust. Balogun emphasized.

The public is encouraged to carry on with their daily activities while adhering to health guidelines. 

 

The Ministry reassures Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s health.
