NCDC Calms COVID-19 Concerns

No SARS-CoV-2 XEC Variant Detected in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reassured the public that the recently identified SARS-CoV-2 XEC variant, a sub-lineage of Omicron detected in Australia, has not been found in Nigeria.

In a statement urging calm, the agency emphasized that the variant, though more transmissible, does not pose heightened severity risks.

The NCDC explained that SARS-CoV-2 variants evolve constantly, and health authorities worldwide are closely monitoring developments.

It noted that the JN.1 variant, currently classified as a “Variant of Interest” (VOI), has been reported in 132 countries, including Nigeria.

However, its sub-variant XEC, labelled as a “Variant Under Monitoring” (VUM), has not met the criteria for a higher threat level.

Although XEC cases have been reported in 43 countries, including Botswana in Africa, there is no evidence of its presence in Nigeria. The agency stated.

The NCDC stressed its readiness strategies, including enhanced testing, genomic sequencing, and the stockpiling of essential resources. It called on healthcare facilities nationwide to increase COVID-19 testing and send positive samples for sequencing to aid monitoring efforts.

The agency reminded Nigerians to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Regular handwashing and the use of hand sanitisers.

Covering coughs and sneezes with tissues or elbows.

Wearing masks in crowded or high-risk settings.

Maintaining physical distancing and ensuring well-ventilated spaces.

Prompt testing and seeking medical care for symptoms.

Noting the ongoing risk COVID-19 poses to vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems, the centre urged state governments and healthcare workers to strengthen public health systems, enhance diagnostic capabilities, and launch awareness campaigns to keep the public informed.

Pledging their unwavering commitment to providing accurate and evidence-based updates to safeguarding public health.

There is no need for panic. We remain dedicated to protecting the health and safety of all Nigerians. the statement concluded.

The agency believes maintaining vigilance and working collectively, Nigeria can continue to navigate the evolving COVID-19 with resilience and confidence.
