Over 90 civil society organizations have united to demand justice and accountability following the unlawful arrest and detention of prominent human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi.

Arrested by plain-clothes officers in an aggressive operation reminiscent of criminal apprehensions, Farotimi now faces charges of criminal defamation, a charge that is legally non-existent in the jurisdictions involved.

This is not just an attack on Mr. Farotimi but on Nigeria’s democracy and the rule of law. declared Amnesty International Nigeria in a December 10 statement.

Farotimi’s ordeal began after publishing his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, in which he criticized influential figures Tony Elumelu and Chief Afe Babalola.

Critics allege that these powerful individuals leveraged their influence to orchestrate his arrest rather than seeking redress in a civil court.

They noted that CCTV footage from Farotimi’s office revealed unprofessional officers crossing state lines, unlawfully seizing phones, and threatening his staff.

Legal experts and activists have slammed this as a misuse of law enforcement, warning of a dangerous trend of weaponizing state agencies to suppress dissent.

Defamation is a civil matter and should be treated as such. The misuse of state resources to settle personal grievances undermines our legal system. noted Chidi Odinkalu, a leading rights advocate.

The coalition is urging authorities to respect the constitution, drop the charges, and release Farotimi immediately.

As the world marks International Human Rights Day, these groups are amplifying calls to abolish criminal defamation laws and protect free expression.

Justice cannot thrive where dissent is silenced. one activist remarked.

Noting the case as a defining moment for Nigeria’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
