Pushes for Stability, Health, And Equality
The ECOWAS Parliament has approved a 2025 community budget of 418 million Units of Account (UA) to strengthen regional stability and foster inclusive growth.
The budget plan prioritizes healthcare, infrastructure, and gender equality across West Africa, aiming to address pressing challenges in the region.
A statement issued on December 12, 2024, said the budget earmarks 18.7 million UA for the Parliament, marking a 19.5% reduction from last year.
While the ECOWAS Commission received 221.8 million UA to drive policy implementation.
Notably to boost the West African Health Organization (WAHO), whose budget has increased by 14.2% to 71.6 million UA.
This allocation underscores ECOWAS’s determination to enhance healthcare systems and address public health challenges.
The Parliament also tackled political tensions in the region, urging an extension of the January 2025 deadline for Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger’s request to exit ECOWAS. Time is essential to foster meaningful dialogue and avoid regional disintegration.
To accelerate development, ECOWAS adopted ten Community Acts addressing vital sectors such as energy, transport, and education.
These policies are expected to stimulate economic growth and improve living standards for millions across the region.
