Call For Immediate End To Crackdown On Human Rights Advocates
A coalition of over 60 civil society organizations has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to end the harassment of Amnesty International Nigeria and other civic organizations.
The groups condemned the Nigeria Police Force for threatening Amnesty International over its report, “Bloody August: Nigerian Government’s Violent Crackdown on #EndBadGovernance Protests.”
It said, according to the National Human Rights Commission, 27 protesters were killed, and 800 were arrested.
Stressing that, human rights lawyer Femi Falana had provided even starker figures, reporting 22 deaths and over 2,000 arrests.
Emphasizing the government’s failure to address serious allegations of police brutality.
Rather than investigating these grave abuses, the authorities are targeting those exposing the truth. said a coalition spokesperson
The groups warned that such actions undermine Nigeria’s democracy, which is founded on constitutional and international commitments to human rights.
We stand in solidarity with Amnesty International and demand the government uphold the rule of law. the coalition declared.
The statement urged the Tinubu administration to ensure justice for victims and provide a safe environment for activists and journalists.
Civil society leaders cautioned that silencing dissent could erode accountability and destabilize Nigeria’s civic space.
