FG Unveils 64-Bed Facility, Pledges To Curb Medical Tourism

Vows Affordable Healthcare For Every Nigerian

The Federal Government has taken a step to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system with the commissioning of a 64-bed facility and a state-of-the-art clinical services building at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja. 

This facility, which includes an 18-bed renal unit for hemodialysis, aims to improve access to quality healthcare and reduce the nation’s reliance on medical tourism.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing affordable healthcare under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. 

With these new additions, the need for Nigerians to seek critical care abroad, such as kidney transplants, is being addressed. Dr. Salako said.

He further highlighted ongoing efforts to make healthcare more affordable, including an initiative that has reduced dialysis costs by 80% in 10 federal institutions.

The Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, is now poised to join this transformative program. he added.

Dr. Salako also unveiled plans to boost healthcare affordability through the removal of tariffs on pharmaceuticals, expanded health insurance coverage, and unlocking the healthcare value chain.

Also, Prof. Saad Ahmed, Medical Director of FMC Jabi, noted that the new facilities would not only enhance healthcare delivery but also serve as a training hub for medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and laboratory scientists.

This initiative highlights the government’s determination to reverse medical tourism and ensure accessible, world-class healthcare for all Nigerians.
