Call For Justice And Transparency
Civil society organizations (CSOs) have called on the Nigerian military to prioritize sweeping reforms in its operational protocols to safeguard civilian lives and rebuild public trust.
The call comes in the wake of a tragic airstrike in Zamfara State, which has reignited public outcry over civilian casualties during counterterrorism operations.
In a statement by the Community of Practice Against Mass Atrocities, released on January 16, 2025, the CSOs emphasized the urgent need for enhanced intelligence gathering, precise targeting, and robust measures to minimize harm to non-combatants.
They stressed that the path to healing must include accountability and justice for affected communities.
Accountability and justice are non-negotiable for the victims of these horrific incidents. said a spokesperson for the Community of Practice Against Mass Atrocities.
The groups further urged the National Human Rights Commission to ensure adequate compensation and rehabilitation for survivors, emphasizing the need to help victims rebuild their lives.
We stand in solidarity with the affected communities and all those who have suffered irreparable losses. The statement read, stressing the importance of prioritizing human rights and justice.
The CSOs also called on the Nigerian government to demonstrate greater transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights in its security operations.
They argued that rebuilding trust between the military and civilians is essential for an effective counterterrorism strategy.
Restoring public confidence in our security agencies is not just a moral imperative, it’s a cornerstone for a safer, more secure Nigeria. The statement concluded.
The groups also highlighted the need for public-private collaboration and continuous military improvements, urging the government to chart a new course that prioritizes professionalism and civilian safety in all security efforts.
