Focuses on 2025 Crisis Response Strategy
The European Union has announced a significant humanitarian aid package of €510 million to support Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African nations, as part of its €1.9 billion global assistance budget for 2025.
This funding aims to address pressing humanitarian challenges in critical regions such as the Sahel, the Lake Chad Basin, North-West Nigeria, and the Greater Horn of Africa.
Hadja Lahbib, the EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness, and Crisis Management, emphasized the need for immediate intervention while calling for respect for international humanitarian law.
Funding is not enough; we need to be able to reach the most vulnerable. Safe and unimpeded access to people in need is crucial. Lahbib stated in a press release on January 17, 2025.
In addition to the substantial support for Africa, the EU has allocated €470 million areas in the Middle East and North Africa, with a focus on Gaza and Yemen.
Adding that as Ukraine is still grappling with the ongoing war in its third year, the Union has expressed Commitment to releasing €140 million, while €8 million is earmarked for neighbouring Moldova.
Meanwhile, Latin America, Asia, and the Pacific will also benefit from a €330 million allocation, targeting countries like Venezuela, Myanmar, and Afghanistan.
However, to enhance its global humanitarian response, the EU has set aside €295 million to address unforeseen emergencies and €110 million for innovative relief projects and partnerships.
This approach emphasizes the EU’s ongoing commitment to delivering life-saving assistance through trusted partners, ensuring aid reaches those who need it most efficiently and effectively.
