Reaffirms Commitment To Combat Insecurity
Over 70 civil society organizations have strongly urged the federal government to tackle the root causes of insecurity instead of accusing NGOs of aiding terrorism in Nigeria’s North-East, North-West, and North-Central regions.
In a statement released on January 21, 2025, the groups condemned the allegations made by a former senior military official, calling them “reckless” and a dangerous diversion from the real security challenges facing the nation.
These accusations unfairly target organizations that have been at the forefront of humanitarian efforts, providing life-saving aid to millions. The statement read.
The NGOs emphasized their strict adherence to regulatory frameworks and their crucial role in countering violent extremism by addressing poverty and social grievances.
They called on the government to focus on dismantling terrorist networks rather than scapegoating civil society, warning that such inflammatory rhetoric could jeopardize humanitarian operations and worsen the crisis.
The cost of stifling civil society far outweighs any perceived benefits. It stressed.
Despite the challenges, the NGOs reaffirmed their commitment to partnering with the government to combat insecurity and drive national development, urging authorities to recognize their efforts in fostering peace and stability.
