Nigeria Leads Charge For Africa’s Permanent Seat At UN Security Council – Tuggar

Calls For Stronger African Leadership On The Global Stage

Nigeria is stepping up its campaign for Africa’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, with Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar reaffirming the country’s unwavering commitment to leading the continent globally.

Speaking at the 2025 World Economic Forum in Davos during a panel titled “Africa’s Momentum,” Tuggar criticized Africa’s exclusion from the Council, even though nearly 60% of its resolutions focus on African issues.

Africa cannot remain on the sidelines while decisions that shape our destiny are made without us. He declared.

He condemned policies such as the Deforestation Law, which he argued unfairly targets Africa’s agricultural sector while ignoring the role of global technology firms in enabling deforestation.

Tuggar emphasized that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria’s strategic autonomy and non-alignment stance position it as a natural leader for Africa’s global interests.

He highlighted Nigeria’s long-standing contributions to the continent’s liberation efforts and ongoing technical aid programs that support African nations in key sectors.

The Minister stressed that Nigeria’s participation in the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa is crucial to amplifying Africa’s voice in global economic reforms.

Tuggar asserted that Nigeria’s diplomatic influence, economic strength, and history of non-threatening cooperation with its neighbours make it the strongest contender to represent Africa at the UN Security Council.
